But inevitably, someone will come along and say, "I couldn't do that. I don't have the talent."
Does talent even exist? Does it mean being born with a gift? Or is it a skill that can be learned?
This is an age-old question that remains unanswered to this day.

No one is born a master. Not even those who make everything look easy.
In his book Outliers, Malcolm Gladwell popularized the 10,000-hour rule. The rule states that it takes about 10,000 hours of deliberate, systematic practice with goals and feedback to reach a world-class level in any field, whether it be music, sports, chess, or art.

The 10,000-hour rule originated with Swedish psychologist K. Anders Ericsson, who discovered it during his studies at the Berlin University of the Arts. He found that

• World-class violinists had practiced 10,000 hours before turning twenty.
• Those who were very good but not excellent had practiced around 8,000 hours.
• Those who were more average had practiced around 4,000 hours.

Thus, there is evidence suggesting that talent and hard work are related—or more bluntly, that talent can be developed.
In other words, talent is not a gift.

What I Call Talent

To me, talent is defined by one thing above all else: a love for what you do. Maybe this love is innate, or maybe the love for what you do comes first and that is where the talent lies.
It could be a love for painting, writing, music, thinking, or playing—it doesn't matter. This love makes the difference between finding something easy or difficult, being willing to invest time, energy, and money, and giving up other things we could do instead. It is also what allows us to endure not being good, making mistakes, and making them again until we improve.

Some discover their love of art, music, or writing because they have the opportunity to explore it. Because someone encourages them, notices them, and believes in them. Because something inside them is bubbling up and wants to come out. That's one side of it—love that grows out of abundance.
But a deep connection can also arise from lack. When all else is missing. When there's an inner urge to express oneself, to be understood, and to make sense of things.

My love of art arose from a sense of lack. Art was my salvation. It is my healing. It helps me connect with the world. Now, it gives rise to abundance, which in turn finds expression in art.
Both paths are valuable; they just offer different approaches.

How Talent Can Be Destroyed

Unfortunately, some talents remain undiscovered or are destroyed over time. In Germany, the values of discipline, performance, and reliability have historically dominated. Creativity is considered more of a side issue or a leisure activity. School subjects like art and music are fine for raising your grade point average. But only a dreamer would consider them a concrete career choice, right?

Our educational ideal dates back to Wilhelm von Humboldt, who emphasized personality development, autonomy, and a broad education—at least in theory. However, this was never fully implemented in practice. With industrialization came the growing demand for functional workers. Education became standardized, normalized, and exam-oriented to prepare students for the job market.

Art, music, and creativity had a marginal place in the curriculum—at best as a "supplement," but never as central educational content. Talent only counted if it was "usable," such as technical skill or discipline.
Even today, learning is still viewed as a duty rather than a means of personal growth. Despite educational reforms such as full-day schooling, inclusion, and digitization, the system remains performance-centered, grade-focused, and selective. Creative subjects are considered "soft," something to cut back on when there is a staff shortage. Teachers often lack the time, resources, or training to nurture individual talents, not to mention large class sizes and the challenges of a globalized and polarized world.

Children explore the world with curiosity. They don't ask if they are good or compare themselves to others. That changes when the "seriousness of life" begins—school.
It seems to me that talent is something given to all of us. The real challenge is preserving it into adulthood.

Protect and Nurture Talent

Talent needs space. It requires trust, patience, and encouragement. Don't think or ask, "What's in it for me?" Children naturally have this openness. They paint, sing, build, and invent.

For this to grow, early specialization, a support program, or training for perfection aren't always necessary. What it requires are adults who don't interfere.
Adults who accompany them without slowing them down. Adults who don't judge, but listen. Sometimes, they should just join in.

The same applies to us adults. Many of us were never allowed to discover our talents. It's perhaps no wonder that so many women become creative once their children have grown up and they have time for themselves again. It's never too late to invest 10,000 hours of work into what you love. It's never too late to stop the self-sabotaging thoughts, such as "I don't have the talent for that." What if that's not true? Maybe you've just never tried. Or not for long enough. Or maybe you haven't tried with love.

Between Beginning and Persevering

So, is it a gift or a skill? Both!
The craft and the tools of the trade can be learned if we desire to learn them. Maybe talent isn't what we start with; it's what we listen to when we're true to ourselves.

The more tasks pile up on my list, the less I know where to start. My thoughts jump from one thing to the next: I really need to get this done. But before that, I should… And wouldn’t it make more sense if I first…

In the end, I just keep going in circles—way too fast, yet getting nowhere. Oh no, I’m about to crash…

When the Thought Carousel Turns into a Creative Block

Art is a space of freedom for me. But how can I think freely when my mind is cluttered with lists? Creativity needs downtime, detours, open spaces—it doesn’t happen on command between two scheduled appointments. Telling yourself, You’ll be inspired from 3 to 4 p.m., just doesn’t work.

Since art is my profession, I make time for it regularly. But even in my line of work, there are plenty of other things to take care of—administrative tasks, communication, paperwork. And I still remember what it was like when art only got a tiny sliver of the day between family, work, and household responsibilities. How much harder must it be when creativity isn’t planned as a priority at all? When it’s not a must like a tax deadline, but instead a want that keeps getting pushed further down the list?

There’s always something important, something urgent, something that needs to get done or remembered. A mind overloaded with tasks is like constant background noise. To-dos keep popping up—an unfinished project, an unanswered message, a vague commitment lingering in the back of my mind. Maybe none of it is truly urgent—yet it’s there. A relentless hum in the background.

And that hum only grows louder—especially when creative time isn’t intentionally scheduled. Other things take priority, just quickly, and in the end, there’s hardly any space left for art. The longer you go without being creative, the harder it becomes. Inspiration can’t be forced—but it can be trained. And it withers if it keeps getting pushed aside.

Mental Load: The Invisible Pressure

Several tabs are open in my browser window. Some I need urgently, others I wanted to check quickly at some point, and some have been open for so long that I don’t even remember why. Everything is there at once, but nothing is truly finished.

When this doesn’t just happen on a computer but in your mind, it’s called Mental Load. Every unfinished task is like a tab running in the background, quietly draining energy—whether it’s an unanswered email, a package that still needs to be returned, or an idea for a project you hope to start someday.

The more that piles up, the harder it is to keep track. At some point, the mental processor overheats. The mind grows tired, and even simple decisions start to feel overwhelming. Constantly juggling so many things is exhausting. No wonder there’s not just no time left for creativity—but no energy either.

How to Clear the Mind

Constant mental or physical overload can lead to serious health issues, including depression. Taking care of yourself, acknowledging your needs, and simply doing something just for you is not selfish. In every flight safety briefing, they tell you to put on your oxygen mask first—because only then can you help others.

Art and creativity ground us, build confidence, improve communication, help process difficult emotions, and reduce stress. When it comes to balance and self-care, creativity is the oxygen mask. The mind won’t empty itself on its own. When Mental Load blocks creativity, intentional countermeasures are needed.

Externalizing Thoughts – The External Brain Principle

My mind is not a good storage space. Everything I try to keep in mind stays open like a browser tab, consuming energy. The simplest solution? Offload it.

That can be anything—a notebook, an app, a simple to-do list. Write it down – get it out. The moment I put something on paper, my brain knows: I don’t have to hold onto this any more.

Creative people often have a hundred ideas at once. And many vanish because they were never captured. I’ve made it a habit to have a place for loose thoughts. I use a sketchbook for ideas, a calendar for appointments, and if inspiration strikes while I’m out, I record a voice memo.

It’s not about acting on everything immediately—it’s about getting it out of my head and into a safe place.

Don’t Put Creativity at the Bottom of the To-Do List

Art is often treated like a reward: “Once I’ve finished everything else, then I can…” But the problem is: Everything else never really gets finished.

Especially when the day is already packed, it helps to schedule creative time intentionally—as a fixed appointment, not just as a filler. Sometimes, even 15 minutes are enough for something that has nothing to do with productivity. A few sketches, playing with colours, jotting down thoughts.

So, is it really such a big deal if the laundry pile sits there for another day? (Maybe it’s not just a cliché that artists' homes look a little different …) Either way, creativity is not a reward—but it rewards. And generously so, if we just give it a little attention.

Being Intentionally Unproductive

Pauses are not stagnation—they are fuel. Creativity often doesn’t come when we actively chase it, but when our mind finally stops searching for a solution. Walks, daydreaming, quietly sitting on a bench—all of these help to reorganize thoughts.

Sometimes, I don’t even realize how loud my mind was until it suddenly becomes quiet. Inspiration can’t be forced, but it needs space to appear. And that’s impossible if your mind is already busy with the next task.

Preventing the Crash Before It Happens

Wile E. Coyote doesn’t fall because he runs too slowly—he falls because he races over the edge without realizing it. And just like that, when we try to keep everything in sight at once, we often fail to notice when it’s simply too much.

But—do I really have to think of everything?

There are tasks that no one else can take on. But often, I hold onto things in my mind that aren’t solely my responsibility. Do I do this because I’m used to it? Because I think it has to be this way? Mental Load isn’t just a matter of organization—it’s also about expectations. The feeling of personal (and entirely unfounded!) inadequacy often leads us to take on more than we can carry.

The mind doesn’t just need breaks—it needs trust. Trust that I don’t have to get everything done immediately. That not everything rests on me. That art, creativity, and free space are not luxuries but essential things that need room—before the crash becomes inevitable.

And trust, too, that inspiration will come—if only you give it the space it needs.

Household, family, finances, appointments—my partner and I share these responsibilities. He can count on me, just as I can count on him. So there’s no real reason for me to shoulder everything alone. I just have to let go.

It was, in fact, a colouring book that gently reconnected me with my creativity. My son had given me a Game of Thrones colouring book for my birthday. Suddenly, the question of where to start didn’t matter anymore. There was no pressure to prove I could still create. I just started colouring.

Maybe not many professional artists would admit this, but in the end, it’s how most of us began as children. I simply had to take that step again.

Children don’t question the outcome — they just start. But as adults, we often hold ourselves back with expectations and self-imposed demands. We’ve forgotten how to create without pressure, and that’s often where we get stuck. The thought that whatever we make has to be beautiful, impressive, or even perfect keeps growing in our minds, making it harder and harder to begin.

That pressure can be paralyzing. The blank canvas or empty page suddenly becomes a symbol of our own expectations, as if every idea has to pass an invisible quality check before it’s even worth trying. And what if it’s not good enough?

But creativity thrives when it’s free — without judgment, without a goal. That’s why the barriers to getting started should be low. Maybe it’s as simple as scribbling a few lines on the paper just to break the blankness. Or limiting yourself to a single colour so the choices don’t feel overwhelming. Or using a colouring book as gentle guidance. What matters is starting — without the pressure for it to be perfect.

The Power of Creativity 

There is no known culture, past or present, that lacks some form of art or creative expression. Art and creativity are universal traits of humanity, deeply rooted in who we are.

They serve not just as a way to create beauty but as a powerful means of self-expression. Even the earliest known artworks reveal the human desire to make experiences and emotions visible — whether through dance, music, painting, or sculpture. Art has long helped process pain, joy, loss, and connection, offering a language beyond words.

It is a fundamental part of what it means to be human, fulfilling essential psychological, social, and cultural needs: expression, communication, meaning-making, identity, and the integration of emotions. Art is not an extra — it is one of the most original forms of human expression, inseparable from our ability to think, feel, and connect with one another.

A Release for the Mind

When we engage in creative activities—whether painting, writing, or crafting—our brain shifts. The focus moves away from analytical thinking towards more free-flowing, intuitive processes. Studies, such as the 2016 research conducted by Drexel University, have shown that creative expression can lower stress hormone levels, regardless of artistic skill or experience. It’s not about perfection but about expression.

Creating can also foster a sense of self-efficacy, reminding us that we have the ability to shape and make a difference. That feeling alone can be empowering, especially during difficult times.

Interestingly, creativity has a physical impact as well. The breath slows, the pulse softens, and the body begins to relax. Creative activities activate the parasympathetic nervous system—the part responsible for rest, recovery, and restoring balance.

Research suggests that mindful creative practices can have effects similar to meditation:

• Present focus: The creative process brings attention to the here and now.
• Less overthinking: Focusing on shapes, colours, or movements gently redirects the mind from racing thoughts.
• Improved body awareness: Working with physical materials like brushes, clay, or paper enhances the connection to the body.

And then there’s the joy. Those moments when we lose ourselves in the creative flow—mixing colours, sketching lines, getting lost in the details—are moments of presence. Creativity can quiet the mental noise and allow us to simply be.

Why We Need Creativity So Urgently

In our achievement-driven society, creativity is often reduced to productivity—art as a result rather than a process. But its true value lies not just in the finished piece, but in what happens while creating: a moment of freedom, of self-determination, where we reclaim control over how we express ourselves.

That’s why it’s so important to keep the threshold for creativity low—because it’s not just about making something, but about reconnecting with ourselves. Creativity can be a tool for self-discovery, stress relief, and restoring the connection to our own body.

What matters most at first isn’t the outcome but the space we create for ourselves. A space where it’s enough to simply do.

The Path Back to Your Own Creativity

Today, I work successfully as a freelance artist. But taking a step back to something as simple as a colouring book was an important part of my journey. It felt like pressing a reset button—allowing me to let go of high expectations, the need to create something remarkable, all of it. I was able to reconnect with what creative expression feels like when it’s free from judgment.

Creativity can be playful. Imperfect. And that’s exactly what makes it so valuable—because it gives us the space to grow, to experiment, and to discover ourselves. This TED Talk by Ethan Hawke on the topic really inspired me:

As children, we painted, cut, and glued without ever wondering whether it was good enough. Somewhere along the way, we lost that trust. And how often do we expect results—from children and from ourselves—that stifle this freedom of expression? Creativity needs space where mistakes are allowed. A space for trying, not for proving.

If you feel the urge to create but don’t know how to start—start small. It doesn’t have to be a masterpiece. A few lines on paper, a colouring book, a DIY project. Just begin and feel the magic. That first step can change everything.

But the forest is a place of retreat and inspiration for me all year round. The changing colours, shapes, scents, and light are endlessly fascinating. You can see it from one time of day to the next, and even more so as the seasons pass. This constant transformation gives me ideas that I try to bring to life in my art.

Colours, Shapes, and Textures: Endless Muse of Nature

When I feel stuck, when my thoughts are going in circles, or my mind feels cluttered, I head into the woods. Just a few steps, and I can feel a shift. The noises from outside fade, replaced by birdsong or the rustling of the wind through the leaves. And beneath it all, there’s a soothing silence.

The forest inspires me to look closer, to notice the fine differences in detail. I translate the forest’s constant transformations into my own visual language, letting nature’s rhythm almost imperceptibly flow into my work.

In spring, when the first buds open and the colours are still soft and fresh, everything feels light, almost fleeting. I bring this delicacy into my studio. My brushstrokes become softer, the colours lighter, sometimes nearly translucent. It feels as if new ideas are budding within me too, gently, like fresh shoots. I try to capture this sense of renewal and hope, without giving too much away – more like a hint of what’s to come.

In summer, when the greens deepen and the woods create a dense canopy of leaves, the light plays with the shadows. It’s like a puzzle of shifting patches of light. I love this balance between depth and vibrancy, and I often find my art needing more layers, more textures. Forms and lines become bolder, details stand out and blend in with their surroundings all at once. The balance between intense colours and quiet simplicity is something that fascinates me every time.

Then comes autumn’s explosion of colour. The leaves, in vivid reds, oranges, and yellows, remind me that even decay can be beautiful. The colours inspire me to be bolder and to play deliberately with contrasts. Change doesn’t always have to be gentle or quiet! The colours can pop, the forms can stand out. My works in autumn reflect this unique mix of lightness and depth, capturing the season’s contrasting moods.

Winter is the season of reduction. When everything shines in shades of grey and cold whites, I rediscover the beauty in simplicity. It feels like a reset – the clear contrast of light and shadow sharpens my focus on what really matters. In this stillness, I find space for minimalist compositions that embrace the unspoken, the quiet tones.

Recharging Among the Trees

I go into the woods without any particular goal. Nature takes away the need to control everything – and that’s exactly what opens the door to creative impulses for me. In the woods, everything can just be as it is – imperfect, wild, unpredictable. The trees stand there, still and patient. I love that, and it inspires me to let go in my own work, to be intuitive, to create freely.

These breaks in nature don’t just give me new ideas; they recharge my creative batteries. Standing among the trees, feeling the all-encompassing quiet, I often realize just how much I needed it. The rush of everyday life falls away, and I feel myself slowly coming back to centre. Sometimes, almost effortlessly, a new perspective, a thought, or an idea for a painting will emerge from this calm.
Then I can return to the studio full of energy, truly present – for my art and for myself.

Through the Eyes of Nature – Artists and Their Landscapes

Many artists draw their creativity from nature – in all its forms. For me, it’s the woods, since I only have to cross a few streets to be surrounded by trees. But there are so many different types of landscapes, each one inspiring artists over the centuries.

For Claude Monet, his garden in Giverny – especially his water lily pond – was an endless source of inspiration. He would spend hours there, studying the light and capturing the shifting colours on the water. Vincent van Gogh immersed himself completely in the landscape as he painted. While living in the south of France, he would go out daily, painting olive groves, cypress trees, and the vibrant yellow of the sunflower fields. You can still feel that energy in every brushstroke.

For Georgia O’Keeffe, it was flowers that inspired her monumental works, and later, the vast desert landscapes of New Mexico. She found something primal in that place, with its clear shapes and intense colours. She once said that the desert was where she truly found herself.

Where’s Your Place to Recharge?

Maybe this is what art and nature have in common – they help us see things in a new way, give us peace, or bring fresh energy. And each of us experiences that differently. Whether it’s finding peace among ancient trees, by the sea, or in an open field – we all have our own unique way of experiencing nature.

When I close the door to my studio, I leave the world outside for a while. I’m entirely with myself—and that’s precisely the space I need to sort through my thoughts and allow ideas to quietly take shape.

Being alone offers me the chance to dive deeply into my work without external distractions. This solitude is far from empty; it’s filled with my thoughts, emotions, often accompanied by music. An inner dialogue emerges, not to replace the outer one, but as a continuation of it; I even create playlists tailored to each art series I’m working on. The atmosphere they create helps guide me into that dialogue with myself and becomes part of my art.

These moments of seclusion aren’t just necessary; they’re a vital part of my creative process. They allow me to organize my thoughts, give my ideas the time they need to develop, and ultimately become something uniquely my own.

For me—and this may differ for every artist—the creative dialogue needs that quiet time of reflection to be fruitful, and vice versa. It’s two sides of the same coin—the dialogue fuels creativity, but it’s solitude that gives it the space to grow. Both elements are essential for me to create deep, authentic art.

The Power of Community: Creativity through Exchange

I find inspiration for my art in many different ways. Nature, for instance, is a constant and reliable source, just like experimenting with a variety of materials. But without engaging with other people, I would often find myself stuck in place. It's the conversations, debates, and differing perspectives that can turn the spark of a new idea into a roaring blaze.

Sometimes it’s a single word, an unexpected viewpoint, or simply the energy someone brings to a conversation that makes all the difference.

Scientific Findings on Creative Collaboration

I’m not alone in this. Creativity plays a crucial role not just in art, but also in science and business, driving innovation and progress. It’s no surprise that more and more studies are exploring how to ignite this engine.

A key finding from many of these studies is that creativity rarely thrives in isolation. Once again, it’s the exchange with others that can significantly enhance creative output—whether through teamwork, interdisciplinary projects, or simply sharing ideas.

This is also supported by a study from the Harvard Business Review. Companies that foster a culture of collaboration by intentionally creating spaces and opportunities for creative exchange tend to develop more innovative solutions.

Similarly, a 2010 study on social network structure found that people who are part of a broad and diverse network are more creative. This is why co-working spaces are becoming increasingly common in the modern workplace. Freelancers—not just in the creative industries—can connect with others in their work environment through these spaces.

After all, humans aren’t made for solitude.

For me personally, these insights mean that I actively seek out and nurture exchange with others. I know that my own creativity is strengthened through dialogue with others, which is why I regularly connect with fellow artists.

Since March of this year, I’ve been a member of such a creative community - a virtual gathering place for inspired individuals from all sorts of creative fields. The exchange there is both friendly and appreciative. This community has become very important to me, both personally and for my artistic work.

In this community, I receive not only valuable feedback but also encouragement when I’m struggling, genuine joy for my successes, and support when I want to explore new directions. The community provides me with the security and motivation to develop my ideas further and to take on new challenges.

Artistic co-operations: When ideas meet

This is also something that companies tap into by creating interdisciplinary teams or organizing innovation workshops. But this concept is not new to the art world either. Artists often join collectives because even the most creative genius sometimes needs a breath of fresh air.

From such collaborations, something truly unique can emerge—something far beyond what any individual could have created alone. I’d like to highlight two such collaborations here. First, the partnership between Andy Warhol and Jean-Michel Basquiat, and second, the collaboration between David Bowie and Brian Eno.

Andy Warhol and Jean-Michel Basquiat: Pop Art Meets Neo-Expressionism

Two artists who, at first glance, couldn’t be more different. Andy Warhol, the master of Pop Art, and Jean-Michel Basquiat, the young, wild Neo-Expressionist, whose work radiated raw energy. Together, they created some of the most exciting artworks of the 1980s.

Their collaboration began in 1982, initiated by Swiss art dealer Bruno Bischofberger, who represented both artists. Warhol, already famous since the 1960s, was in a phase of artistic reinvention. Basquiat, on the other hand, was an emerging artist, rapidly gaining attention with his raw, powerful aesthetic.

Initially, the Italian painter Francesco Clemente was also part of this collaboration. The trio created a series of joint works that developed a unique dynamism through the interplay of styles and the dialogue between the artists. After Clemente left the collaboration in 1984, Warhol and Basquiat continued working together as a duo.

The two became friends, often taking walks through the streets of New York, which became a kind of ritual for them. During these walks, Basquiat would constantly sketch—on napkins, in notebooks, or even on the menus of the restaurants they visited. It’s said that he once found a blank canvas in a Soho dumpster and immediately used it for his sketches.

Their collaboration lasted about two years, from 1983 to 1985, during which they created around 160 works together. Their working method was described as artistic ping-pong: one of them would start painting and then pass the canvas to the other; often, the canvas would go back and forth multiple times. Warhol brought his signature clean lines and symbols to the canvas, while Basquiat added his more chaotic, energetic forms and colours.

The Art World's Reaction

The first joint exhibition of Warhol and Basquiat took place in 1985 at the Tony Shafrazi Gallery in New York. However, the art world's reaction was largely dismissive. While some critics saw the collaboration as an exciting fusion of two distinct styles, the majority considered the works to be unfocused or perceived the partnership as a struggle for artistic dominance. Some harsh critiques even referred to Basquiat as Warhol’s "mascot".

Basquiat, who took the criticism very personally, decided to end the collaboration. The two artists gradually drifted apart. However, Warhol’s death in 1987 deeply affected Basquiat. A year later, Basquiat himself died of a heroin overdose. It was only in the years following their deaths that their collaborative works were reassessed.

Today, these works are regarded as iconic, symbolizing the fusion of pop culture and street art, tradition and rebellion. They are now highly valued and command millions on the art market.

David Bowie and Brian Eno: Reinventing Music

The collaboration between David Bowie and Brian Eno is one of the most influential in music history, often regarded as a milestone in rock and pop music that significantly reshaped the musical landscape of the late 1970s.

David Bowie and Brian Eno first met in the mid-1970s. At that time, Bowie was at the peak of his career but had already begun experimenting with various musical styles. Eno, who gained fame as a member of Roxy Music and later established himself as a pioneer of ambient music, was known for his unconventional approaches and love of experimentation.

After their initial meeting, Bowie and Eno quickly discovered a shared creative wavelength. They had mutual respect and admiration for each other. Bowie appreciated Eno’s intellectual approach to music, while Eno was fascinated by Bowie’s ability to incorporate experimental sounds into accessible pop music.

Their collaboration lasted from 1976 to 1979 and resulted in the creation of the so-called "Berlin Trilogy," consisting of the albums Low (1977), Heroes (1977), and Lodger (1979).

• Low (1977): This album marked a radical departure from Bowie’s previous work. It was experimental, heavily influenced by Eno’s ambient music. The second side of the album is almost entirely composed of instrumental tracks.

• Heroes (1977): The second album of the trilogy, and arguably the most famous. The title track "Heroes" became an anthem of its time, reflecting the mood of the Cold War and the divided city of Berlin. The song tells the story of two lovers kissing by the Berlin Wall.

• Lodger (1979): The third album of the trilogy is considered the least experimental, yet it still incorporated unusual song structures and an international flair, inspired by Bowie’s travels around the world.

This trilogy remains a testament to their groundbreaking collaboration, which pushed the boundaries of what rock and pop music could be, blending innovation with mainstream appeal.

The albums were primarily recorded at Hansa Studios in Berlin, known as the "Studios by the Wall." Located just about 200 meters from the Berlin Wall, the studio’s windows offered a view of one of the watchtowers. One day, Bowie observed a couple kissing near the Wall, directly under the watchtower, which inspired the iconic song "Heroes."

Bowie had moved to Berlin in 1976. West Berlin in the 1970s was a melting pot of creativity, brimming with a sense of new beginnings, driven by the city’s unique political situation. The resulting atmosphere of freedom, protest, and the search for new forms of expression made the divided city a magnet for artists and musicians from around the world.

During the recording sessions, Bowie and Eno often worked late into the night. Eno frequently used his “Oblique Strategies” cards during these sessions. These quirky prompts were designed to help overcome creative blocks, and indeed, they contributed to the creation of some of the most fascinating pieces in music history, capturing the dark yet creative energy of Berlin.

These albums are now regarded as precursors to many musical genres that became popular in the following decades, including post-punk, new wave, and electronic music.

Creativity in Dialogue: A Joint Path

Exchange as inspiration, the artistic dialogue as an invitation to explore and embark on new paths, serving as encouragement or expansion—from music to painting, from painting to writing, and back again—when successful, the whole is often much more than the sum of its parts. Or, it becomes a vibrant, sometimes disorienting yet inspiring, wild, and stimulating experiment, one that future artists can engage with, sparking their own creativity.

Sometimes, this engagement happens much later. My partner, for example, often draws inspiration from the Old Masters to fuel his literary creativity. The dialogue doesn’t have to be symmetrical or take place in real-time. That’s the beauty of art—it can connect across generations.

Of course, no one likes to fail - but how would it feel to try something new, knowing that failure is a necessary part of the experience, and that it means nothing more than entering new territory and gathering useful information along the way?

Creativity researcher at the University of Karlsruhe, Prof Dr Stephan Sonnenburg, says: "Creativity does not develop in the comfort zone of the known, but where the known meets the unknown."
Failed attempts force us to rethink, to change our perspective. Only then can we learn to leave the beaten track and create something new and exciting.

As an artist, it is the imperfect, the vulnerable that inspires me.
Perfection may be beautiful to look at, but it's not real. It is the perceived flaws that make us unique. Breaks don't have to be the end, they can be the beginning of something new.

It's no different in the creative process - small mistakes, mishaps, moments of failure - they too shape our experience. Like a river that seeks a new path by flowing around obstacles. Therein lies beauty, even greatness, not shame.

Fear of Failure

So why are we so afraid of failure?
I remember, long before I became a working artist, being so paralysed by the fear of wasting my art materials that I didn't make any art at all - as if the materials weren't wasted in the first place because they were sitting on a shelf gathering dust.

Fear of failure is one of the greatest obstacles to our creative fulfilment. It is paralysing because it keeps us in a state of insecurity and self-doubt. Instead of boldly trying new ideas and enjoying our creativity, we retreat - and stay in our comfort zone. The result? We hold ourselves back.

The fear of failure has deep roots - it is seen as a danger to be avoided.

You have to watch out like hell!

It's often no different in today's working world: failure can have serious consequences. In the Central European work culture, companies and employers expect impeccable CVs and see failure as a potential risk. A mistake can lead to a loss of reputation, of the perception of being a competent partner, or even of the job itself, putting one's standard of living at risk.

This is not the case in every culture. But in many that are structured like ours, success is equated with personal worth and social status. Mistakes and failure, on the other hand, are stigmatized and seen as a sign of weakness. We are taught from an early age that mistakes are bad and to be avoided. Our education systems emphasize grades and exams. Students are rewarded for not making mistakes, leading to a culture of perfectionism.

This may have been good for survival, but not for creativity.
An artist is not a soldier in the Teutoburg Forest.

Different Perspectives

Interestingly, there are differences in the way men and women deal with the fear of failure.
Studies show that women are often more affected by the fear of failure and tend to be more cautious and perfectionist. This has to do with social expectations and roles.

In patriarchal societies, women are under pressure not to make mistakes. They have to fight harder and achieve more to be perceived as equals. Men, on the other hand, are more likely to be encouraged to take ambitious risks, even if there is a risk of failure.

Why Failure is Important

Failure - the word itself sounds almost brutal. Yet it is an inevitable part of the creative process. Without the courage and risk of going wrong, there is no growth and no innovation. Every creative endeavour holds the potential of not turning out the way we had imagined.

Failures are valuable learning opportunities. They force us to reflect critically and rethink our methods and approaches. We begin to understand what works and what doesn't. This process of continuous learning and adaptation is crucial for creative progress, personal development - and, incidentally, to science, as we continue to falsify ourselves step by step.

Self-Acceptance, the Foundation of Creative Freedom

So creativity is more - much more! - than a pleasant pastime. It allows us to explore and express the surrounding reality - and ourselves - in ways that are truthful and meaningful.
But it takes courage to develop your own voice. The reward for having the courage to fail is that the artwork that succeeds has an emotional depth and truth that is immediately felt, whether as a realization or as an aesthetic or emotional effect.

We should therefore not allow ourselves to be held back, either by the criticism of others or by our own perfectionism. The prerequisite is self-acceptance - the ability to accept ourselves with all our strengths, as well as our potential for failure.
Self-acceptance is central to creative freedom.

Failing with Style

Don't let yourself be paralysed. These tips can help you.

1. Allow yourself to make mistakes
   Don't see mistakes as personal failures, but as learning opportunities. Give yourself permission to fail. If it helps, feel free to write it down. Make your permission form beautiful and hang it above your workspace.
2. Focus on the process
   Don't fixate on the result. Enjoy the creative process and recognize the value of the creation itself. Be open and willing to experiment, which tends to lead to more innovative and original work.
3. Positive self-talk
   Pay attention to your inner self-talk. Be patient and kind to yourself. Replace negative and critical thoughts with positive and supportive statements. Cheer yourself up a little. Take good care of yourself and pay attention to your needs.
4. Analyse your failures
   Were they necessary, educational, valuable, and did they help you in any way? Maybe they weren't, maybe they just cost you money and/or time and were otherwise useless. Why? Learn from your mistakes!
5. Cultivate a Supportive Environment
   Surround yourself with people who nurture your creativity and encourage you.
6. Take your mistakes in stride
   Ice cream maker Ben & Jerry's has a place of honour on its Vermont campus for failed flavours. They are buried in the flavour Graveyard with full honours, including a tombstone.
   That's the way to do it!
   Why not celebrate the idea instead of mourning the failure?

Mistakes as a Stepping Stone

In a world that glorifies perfection and success, it is easy to forget the true value of failure. But it is in creativity that experimenting, daring to try new ideas and accepting mistakes is the key to progress. When we allow ourselves to make mistakes, we open ourselves up to unimagined possibilities.

I hardly know an artist who hasn't taken a really long time to call herself that - and then hasn't turned around to see if anyone disagrees.
Questioning is part of the creative process, even ourselves.
But self-doubt costs us too much power. Energy that we drain from our creativity.

Throughout my creative career, I have faced the challenge of identifying myself as an artist. Despite the highs and lows of my freelance work, I have learned the value of playfulness, making mistakes, and finding my own path.
Creativity is not just a profession, but a passion that enriches my life and nourishes my soul.

By reflecting on my experiences, I have discovered what helps me to be creative and find inspiration in everyday life. My 'Insider Tips'. I would like to share them with you. These are not strict rules or instructions, nor are they a recipe for improving your art or becoming successful as an artist.

Instead, it is an invitation to trust your own creativity and find your unique voice. Ultimately, art is a journey of self-discovery that constantly surprises and inspires us.

Before we get into what I'm talking about, let's define Creativity and what that means.

A Definition: What is Creativity?

Creativity is a crucial human ability that fosters innovation and shapes our world. It involves combining existing ideas in new ways and adopting new perspectives to find original solutions to problems.

Creativity takes many forms and exists in all areas of life, including art, science, technology, business, and everyday life. It takes courage, openness, curiosity, and a willingness to experiment to think beyond conventions and norms.
Inspiration, experiences, environment, intuition, imagination, and self-reflection all influence it.

Why Creativity is Essential

Creativity is not just a hobby or a way to grow personally. It is a crucial factor in driving progress in all aspects of life. Developing new ideas, rethinking problems, and approaching them in innovative ways are essential to scientific discoveries, technological advancements, and cultural and artistic achievements. Creativity is central to creating a dynamic and vibrant society.

It can be crucial in solving complex problems and promoting positive change in society. With it, we can build a sustainable and equitable future for everyone.

Climate Change and the Environmental Crisis: Creative approaches to architecture and urban planning can create sustainable cities and buildings that reduce energy consumption and environmental impact. Vertical gardens and green roofs, for example, improve air quality and promote urban biodiversity.

Additionally, the development of environmentally friendly products and technologies helps to reduce resource consumption and minimize the ecological footprint. Sustainable packaging, environmentally friendly transportation, and energy-efficient household appliances are just a few examples.

Creativity leads to innovative recycling and upcycling solutions, reducing waste and utilizing resources more efficiently. Seemingly useless materials can be transformed into new products and works of art.

Health Crisis and Medical Innovation: Creativity plays an important role in medicine, as demonstrated by the development of vaccines during the coronavirus pandemic. Scientists and researchers utilized innovative technologies and creative approaches to rapidly and effectively develop vaccines against the virus. For instance, they employed mRNA technology to create vaccines that elicited a strong immune response and impacted the course of the pandemic.

The development of innovative diagnostic and treatment methods is aiding in the early detection and more effective treatment of diseases. For instance, in cancer research, new approaches are leading to targeted therapies that activate the immune system to combat cancer cells or target specific genetic mutations.

Additionally, creativity plays a crucial role in promoting mental health and well-being. Art therapy, music therapy, and other creative approaches, including the use of virtual reality for therapeutic purposes, are successfully helping people cope with mental health conditions such as depression, anxiety, and trauma.

Social Injustice and Inequality: Creativity can be a powerful tool for social change, allowing us to denounce social injustices and inequalities and promote positive change. Artistic expressions, such as music, theater, and literature, can help raise awareness of social issues and encourage public discourse on important topics, such as racism, discrimination, and social injustice.
This is exemplified by the Black Lives Matter movement. The protests were supported by art installations, graffiti, and music, which helped to raise awareness of racism and police violence and sparked a broad social debate.

Technological Challenges and Ethical Issues: Overcoming technological challenges requires creativity, which promotes interdisciplinary collaboration and the exchange of ideas between different specialists.

This can improve the efficiency, safety, and performance of systems and give rise to new technologies, such as autonomous vehicles, intelligent machines, and medical robotics, which have the potential to improve lives and transform society.

However, creativity also plays a crucial role in the ethical issues related to advances in artificial intelligence, robotics, and genetic engineering. Ethical principles and values are integrated into the development and application of new technologies to ensure that they benefit society and address potential risks and concerns.

A Side Issue: Personal Development?

So is social development the more important role of creativity? This is not easy to answer, as both aspects are closely linked and influence each other.

Creativity fosters the development of new ideas, products and services that can improve people's lives, promote economic growth and bring about positive changes in society.

On the other hand, creativity plays a crucial role in the personal development of each individual. Through creative activities, we can discover our individual strengths and abilities, find self-expression, build self-confidence and improve our cognitive skills. Creativity promotes our emotional health, helps us to reduce stress and experience positive emotions. In this sense, creativity is an essential part of everyone's personal growth and self-actualization.

When we see that we are capable of creating something new or solving complex problems, we learn to trust ourselves and develop a positive self-image. Creativity promotes lifelong learning and personal growth by encouraging us to be open to new ideas and experiences.

Ultimately, personal and social development are closely linked, and creativity plays an important role in both. By developing and utilizing our creative abilities, we can not only enrich our own lives, but also make a positive contribution to society and help create a better world for all.

From the Everyday Life of an Artist: 15 Creative Tips

Facilitating creativity in daily life can be challenging. Here are some tips that help me unleash my creativity.

Keep in mind that everyone has their own unique approach to creativity, so consider my advice as a suggestion. Select what resonates with you and trust your instincts. Change, ignore, or make these characteristics your own. It's okay to follow all of them, none of them, or something in between. Do what feels right for you.
Cherry-picking is expressly encouraged!

1. Make your creative space your personal retreat by surrounding yourself with beautiful things that inspire you. Focus on your style and favorite things. Avoid storing your art materials away. Keep your tools within reach for easy access.
   Good lighting and music can enhance creativity in any workspace. If you prefer a more chaotic environment, embrace it. Remember, this is your space!
2. Your work is unique. Only you can create it. Every time you create something, you put a piece of yourself into it.
3. Be prepared to take risks. Give yourself permission to be playful, make mistakes, and fail sometimes. Simply explore your creative process.
4. Leave your studio and seek inspiration outside. Explore nature and observe your surroundings. Keep a sketchbook and pens handy to capture your ideas.
5. Give your creativity time. It is important. Two hours a day, half an hour or one day a week - whatever fits into your life. Ensure that you keep this time free for yourself and avoid sacrificing it for household chores. Those can wait.
6. Just get started! Use what you already have. You don't have to buy lots of new materials. You can also create wonderful - and sustainable - works of art with upcycled materials.
   
7. Don't forget to take breaks in between. They are vital. Even short breaks can give your creativity new nourishment.
   
8. Challenge yourself. Work with a limited color palette or only with certain materials. This way you can give your inspiration a boost.
   
9. Create your own mark-making tools. You can use them to emphasize shapes and textures in your artwork and give them more expression.
   Use anything you can think of: Branches, twigs or grasses from your last walk in the woods, old bank or membership cards, utensils from the kitchen or toolbox, flowers, thorns from nature. All with interesting shapes and textures. Be creative.
   
10. Always look for opportunities to meet and exchange ideas with other artists.
    
11. Start with no expectations of the finished artwork.
    
12. It's just paint! The only way to waste it is to leave it unused in the tube.
    
13. Don't worry about developing a specific style. Instead, focus on how you use your material. Play with it. A personal style must grow naturally.
    
14. Take your time and be patient with yourself. Don't compare yourself to others.
    
15. Have fun!
