A while ago, in connection with the new limited edition art prints I've been offering lately, I told you about giclée prints and I promised to explain exactly what they are. And tadaaa! I want to keep that promise today.
So, what are giclées? Time for a bit of product knowledge.
What are Giclées?
In short, giclée prints are art prints of such tremendous quality that they are almost indistinguishable from the original to the naked eye. Prints of such high quality can even be found in art exhibitions, galleries and museums. By the way, when we talk about a fine art print, we usually mean a giclée print. But what is so special about this type of art print? Giclée prints are characterized by:
- A very wide colour spectrum
- Powerful colour depths
- Fine gradations of blacks and greys; and
- An outstanding reproduction of detail
The often large-format prints are produced using perfectly calibrated, high-resolution inkjet printers. Only the best materials are used - high-quality archival paper and highly pigmented, light fast archival-quality inks. Depending on the paper used, the colour fastness of giclée prints is guaranteed between 75 and 200 years. By the way, good domestic colour printers work with the 4-colour system. With giclée printing, up to 12 colours are processed. This makes it possible to print every conceivable shade of colour.
Where do Giclées come from?
The term giclée, or actually giclée, comes from the French. More precisely, it derives from the verb "gicler", which means "to splash" or "to spray".
The first inkjet printers (or inkjet printers) appeared in the early 1990s. At first, the process was mainly used for pre-press. Proofs were made to inspect images that were intended for large print runs. Due to the high quality, errors were easy to recognize and correct. Soon, however, artists and photographers discovered the enormous potential for their art. The technique developed quickly, paper manufacturers followed suit and developed high-quality paper especially for this process, thus creating today's high quality standard.
I have theprintspace produce the art prints in strictly limited editions from my originals using the giclée process. Have a look around, maybe you will fall in love with one of the motifs.
